Why We Check Your Internal Fitness Before Your Muscles
The first thing we explain in every Programme Discussion.
Most people come in expecting to talk about muscles: how much they can lift, where they want to tone, what they want to build. We start somewhere else. Before strength, before shape, we look at your internal fitness.
What internal fitness means
Internal fitness is how well your heart, lungs and blood vessels deliver oxygen to your body while it works. In sports science, it is called cardiovascular fitness.
Muscular fitness
Strength, size and shape. Built by lifting and resistance work.
Internal fitness
Heart, lungs and blood vessels delivering oxygen while you work.
It has very little to do with your muscles. You can't see it in the mirror. But it decides how long you can keep going, how fast you recover, and how hard your heart has to work for everyday effort.
Why it comes first
Muscles run on oxygen
If internal fitness is low, your heart reaches its limit before your muscles do. You stop because you are out of breath, not because you are weak.
It shapes every session
How hard you can train, how long you can sustain it and how fast you recover between rounds all depend on it.
It tells us what is safe
It shows how much load your body is ready for today, so the first weeks build you up instead of wearing you down.
It reflects health
One of the clearest markers of long-term heart health and how well your body is ageing.
Muscles run on oxygen.
The heart decides the supply.
How we read it
In the discussion, we look at three numbers that describe your internal fitness.
How hard your heart works at rest.
How much oxygen your body can use at full effort.
Where effort shifts from steady to hard.
These tell us where you stand today, and later, whether your training is working.
Then, the muscles
Once we understand your internal fitness, the rest of the programme makes sense. Everything else is built on top of it, not beside it.
